ESPN suspends Bill Simmons for podcast calling Roger Goodell a 'liar'

Simmons, who had earlier written an angry screed wondering how Goodell is even still employed, snapped off a three-minute rant on his “B.S. Report” podcast that left no doubt about his perceptions of the commissioner: “Goodell, if he didn’t know what was on that tape, he’s a liar. I’m just saying it. He is lying. If you put him up on a lie detector test, that guy would fail. For all these people to pretend they didn’t know is such [expletive]ing [expletive]. It really is, it’s such [expletive]ing [expletive]. For him to go into that press conference and pretend otherwise … I was so insulted.” (The full version of Simmons’ thoughts on Goodell is below.) Simmons, no stranger to discipline from ESPN, knew what he was doing, and what he was risking. Elsewhere in the podcast, he effectively dared ESPN to punish him: “I really hope somebody calls me or emails me and says I’m in trouble for anything I say about Roger Goodell, because if one person says that to me, I’m g...

BlackBerry Unveils Its Passport Smartphone

ORONTO— BlackBerry Ltd.  BBRY -0.47%  ‘s first major phone launch in nearly two years underscores Chief Executive John Chen’s commitment to the device business. But tests loom as Mr. Chen pursues his ambitious turnaround of the company amid uncertain demand for the new phone. BlackBerry unveiled its 4.5-inch square-shaped Passport Wednesday simultaneously in Toronto, London and Dubai, touting the device’s large screen and apps geared to professionals as part of a larger strategy to win back its traditional corporate and government customers. Under Mr. Chen, BlackBerry’s ability to meet the Passport’s target launch date stood out against the delays that plagued the company’s previous global device launch in January 2013. The BlackBerry 10 phones failed to catch on in a market dominated by Apple Inc. AAPL -0.87%  ‘s iPhones and Android-powered devices. The launch also highlights Mr. Chen’s effort to reestablish the company’s credibili...

The Spiritual Meaning Of The Food On Your Rosh Hashanah Table

The Jewish New Year is celebrated by greeting one another with the words  shana tovah u’metukah,  Hebrew for “a good and sweet new year!” As a result, the table is very deliberately filled with food that reflects an appetite for happy, prosperous days to come. The Huffington Post spoke with Naomi Ross, an instructor at the Brooklyn-based Center for Kosher Culinary Arts and founder of Jewish Cooking Concepts, to explain the spiritual significance of the foods that appear on the Rosh Hashanah table. Round Challah Bread  A festive Jewish meal wouldn’t be complete without having bread on the table, according to Naomi Ross. This is why challah, a braided egg bread, makes an appearance at every Shabbat dinner. The chef considers the table to be like an altar and the ...

Never-married adults reach record high count; experts eye indicators on why some will, won't

http://isthattrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/9633-140x300.jpg The portion of American adults who have never married has reached a record high, according to a Pew Research Center report that says one-fifth or about 42 million people who are 25 and older have never said “I do.” In 1960, 9 percent of folks that age had never married. The increase reflects shifts in values, economics and gender patterns, but not notably decreased regard for marriage, according to Pew senior researcher Wendy Wang, who co-wrote the report, released today. “It is not like there is a lack of desire for marriage,” she said. “Poll after poll shows the majority among the never-marrieds still want to get married, but when you ask why they are not currently married, the top reasons are either they have not found the right person or they are just not financially ready.” Financial reasons top the list of why individuals 25 to 34 remain single. The report also documents mixed feelings about marriage’s role in soci...

Oakland Co. crowd protests disability cuts

http://isthattrue.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/healthcuts18-300x225.jpg Auburn Hills –  — Parents of people with disabilities and service providers pleaded Tuesday night for relief from funding cuts as they jammed a meeting of the Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority. With all 140 seats in the board’s meeting room filled, some people who showed up for the session were turned away. State aid and Medicaid cuts are cascading down to agencies that provide respite care, therapy and other services to people with mental and developmental disabilities. Authority officials said they’ve warned for months that unlike a year ago, the board could not absorb more than $20 million in revenue losses and would have to pass on cuts to providers. The board pledged Tuesday to hold meetings next month with parents to brainstorm ways to ease the impact of the funding cuts, which take effect with the new fiscal year Oct. 1. General fund cuts from the state and reductions due to Medicaid are occ...
